US Senate Leaders See Change for Farm Bill Vote in the Near Future

A month-long impasse over amendments to a five-year U.S. farm subsidy bill is near resolution, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Monday, as Congress began its final three weeks of the 2007 session.

“I think we’re at a point where we should be able to do a farm bill by unanimous consent,” said Reid, referring to an agreement on how to handle legislation.

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle announced his Next Generation Agriculture Plan. during an annual meeting of dairy businesses in Madison. The new initiatives are expected to help the dairy and agriculture industries move forward with innovations, new markets and more green opportunities, Doyle said.

Idaho Milk Production Soon to Exceeds New York

In USDA’s Sept. milk production report Idaho came within 4 mil. lbs. of out-producing New York to take the No. 3 spot in U.S. milk production.  In Sept., Idaho produced 979 mi. lbs. of milk while New York produced 983 mil. lbs.  Ten years ago, Idaho was the nations No. 9 milk producing state.

The November Milk-Feed price ratio decreased to 3.00 from October’s value of 3.09.  This compares to the November 2006 value of 2.44 .

Leahy Doubtful on Farm Bill Passage

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said Friday it is unlikely the stalled $288 billion Farm Bill is passed before the end of the year, throwing into question an upgrade of a safety net program for dairy farmers and money to clean up Lake Champlain.

“Not good,” Leahy said when asked about the bill’s short-term prospects. “It’s more likely we’ll pass a continuing resolution extending the life of the current Farm Bill and then work to pass a new bill in January, if cooler heads prevail.”
