For a fifth straight month, cheese exports in July
were the highest they’ve been in the last six years; cheddar volume is about 20% of the total. Total cheese
exports so far this year are 50% higher than they were a year ago. It appears that total exports this year will set a

The nation’s cheese supplies continued to pile up, reaching a 26-year high last month, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.
U.S. cheese inventories totaled 1.012 billion pounds at the end of April, up 7.8 percent from the same period in 2009, the USDA said in its monthly Cold Storage report May 21. That’s the highest for any month since supplies topped 1.044 billion in Nov. 1984. For the full story click here.

Federal statistics show that Wisconsin is still the nation’s big cheese.
Wisconsin produced 2.65 billion pounds of cheese last year. That accounted for a nation-best 26 percent of the U.S. cheese output in 2009. For the complete story click

There were 211,700 dairy cows to the slaughterhouse in May, the smallest figure (on a daily average
basis) since July 2008 according to today’s
NASS report.

The
May milk production report was released yesterday by the USDA. The
data for Wisconsin shows a preliminary May production value of 2.179 bil. lbs. On a 30-day basis this value is 2.109 bil. lbs. which represents a 2.1% increase over the April production level. The May 09 production level is 1.9% higher than the May 08 level. For the US as a whole milk production was estimated to increase just 0.1%. California’s production decreased 1.9%.

Total cheese output was 846 mil. lbs,
3.2% above April 2008 and 2.8% below March 2009.&nsp;
Butter prod. was 144 mil. lbs, 3.9 % below April 2008 and
2.1% below March 2009.

The April Cold Storage report was released today. end-of-April
Total Cheese stocks was 914.1 mil. lbs., an increase of 20 mil. lbs from Mar. This compares to 855.9 milk. lbs. at the end of April 2008.
End of month
butter stocks stood at 242.7 mil. lbs., a 30.3 mil. lb increase over the stock level at the end of March. This compares with an April 2008 stock level of 251.5 mil. lbs.
