USDA Releases Initial 2010 Dairy Forecasts

Yesterday the USDA issued its 2010 dairy market projections in its May WASDE report, forecasting continued declines in milk production and higher milk and dairy product prices. The department projects milk prod. to decrease 0.5% in 2010, to 186.6 bil. lbs. This year’s output is projected to decrease by 0.9% to 187.7 billion lbs.

March Dairy Product Production Data Released Today

According to today’s Dairy Products report, total cheese output was 871 mil. lbs, 4.3% March 2008.   U.S. butter production was 145 mil. lbs., 4.4% below March 2008.

Cost-of-Production Based Milk Price System Proposed

The latest proposal from Sens. Arlen Specter and Robert P. Casey Jr., Democrats of Pennsylvania, would require the USDA to base the Class III price upon the national average cost of production.   In practice, the bill would fundamentally revamp the way the government dictates minimum prices that food companies must pay farmers for milk. But the bill’s ambitious reach appears to be its stumbling block; lobbying groups for farmer-owned cooperatives and the companies that buy their milk both oppose it.

March MILC Payment Will Be $2.01/cwt

With the release of the April Agricultural Prices report, the final March corn grain, soybean and alfalfa hay prices are available.  The resulting March MILC payment will be $2.01/cwt.

Humboldt Creamery Declares Bankruptcy

Humboldt Creamery has filed for bankruptcy protection just two months after former CEO Rich Ghilarducci scandalized the company by revealing its finances weren’t as sweet as they seemed.

The bankruptcy will make it possible for the creamery to keep operating, but it could also tear it from the hands of its member farmers. The company’s $50 million to $100 million debt, combined with the inaccurate financials, prompted the Tuesday morning Chapter 11 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Santa Rosa.

Producer Handler Provisions to be the Focus of May 4th Federal Order Hearing

The USDA announced this week that a national public hearing will be held starting on Monday, May 4, to consider proposals seeking to amend or remove the producer handler provisions and revise the exempt plant provisions of federal milk marketing orders. USDA Sec. Announces Plan to Benefit Nutrition Programs and Dairy Farmers

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced that approximately 200 mil. lbs of NFDM will be transferred from the CCC to USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service for use in domestic feeding programs. The goal is to help support both low income families struggling to put nutritious food on their tables and dairy farmers who have been challenged by high feed costs and low dairy price. Foremost Farms Sells Milk Bottling Plants to Dean Foods

Foremost Farms USA, one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the nation, has sold its Golden Guernsey and Morning Glory milk bottling plants in Waukesha and De Pere to Dean Foods Co. (DF), a Dallas-based food and beverage distributor.

The plants, employing 282 people, will continue operating and buying milk from area dairy farmers, according to Foremost Farms.

The sale includes the Golden Guernsey and Morning Glory brands. It also means that Foremost Farms will focus exclusively on its wholesale dairy products business and will no longer be a retailer.

CWT Achieves Target of Two-Thirds Milk Supporting Their Programs

Cooperatives Working Together announced Thursday that it has reached its goal of signing up a supermajority of the nation’s milk supply for two years.  According to CWT officials, 67% of the nation’s milk supply has now committed to pay the 10 cent per hundredweight membership assessment for a full two years, from Jan. 2009 through Dec. 2010, and more memberships are still being received that will further boost that figure.
