Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced that approximately 200 mil. lbs of NFDM will be transferred from the CCC to USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service for use in domestic feeding programs. The goal is to help support both low income families struggling to put nutritious food on their tables and dairy farmers who have been challenged by high feed costs and low dairy price. With the release of the final feed price estimates for February in March’s Agricultural Prices Report, the MILC payment for February will be $1.5132/cwt.

Foremost Farms USA, one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the nation, has sold its Golden Guernsey and Morning Glory milk bottling plants in Waukesha and De Pere to Dean Foods Co. (DF), a Dallas-based food and beverage distributor.
The plants, employing 282 people, will continue operating and buying milk from area dairy farmers, according to Foremost Farms.
The sale includes the Golden Guernsey and Morning Glory brands. It also means that Foremost Farms will focus exclusively on its wholesale dairy products business and will no longer be a retailer.

Cooperatives Working Together announced Thursday that it has reached its goal of signing up a supermajority of the nation’s milk supply for two years. According to CWT officials, 67% of the nation’s milk supply has now committed to pay the 10 cent per hundredweight membership assessment for a full two years, from Jan. 2009 through Dec. 2010, and more memberships are still being received that will further boost that figure. lbs., up 1.5% from Dec. 07.
Prod./cow averaged 1,726 lbs., 8 pounds above Dec. 07. The
number of milk cows on farms was 8.48 mil.

Three loads of butter were sold to the government on Jan. 7th for $1.05
under the support program. A total of 121,694 lbs. from the western
region were sold to the CCC, the first support-program purchases
since the Spring of 2003. &bnsp; From February-June 2003, 11.3 million lbs. of butter
was sold to CCC. At that time it had been 8 years since the CCC had purchased butter. In addition as of January 7th more than 123 million lbs of NFDM has been sold to the CCC.

Fonterra Cooperative Group Ltd., the world’s biggest dairy exporter, said
whole milk powder auction prices fell to their lowest in more than two years amid slowing global demand.
The average price fell 9.3 percent to $2,017 a metric ton in a sale yesterday, the company said on its GlobalDairyTrade Web site. Milk powder slumped a sixth month and is down 54 percent since the company began the monthly auctions in July.

As of January 5, 2009 the USDA implemented slight changes in the CCC purchase prices for cheese. New support rates are $1.13 for blocks and
$1.10 for barrels. The purchase price for bulk butter remains $1.05 and nonfortified NDM remains 80¢. The government
will no longer buy processed cheese, 1-lb. prints of butter or fortified or instant NDM. The document detailing these support prices can be found by clicking

The Nov. dairy products report was released today.
Total cheese output was 826 mil. lbs.,
1.3% above Nov. 2007.
Butter prod. was 134 mil. lbs, 2.2% above Nov. 2007.
NFDM production was up 34.8% over the Nov. 2007 level.
