August Dairy Products Report Shows Decrease Cheese Output and Increase Dry Products

Total Aug. cheese output was 795 mil. lbs., 0.1 percent below August ‘06 and 0.1 percent below July ‘07.

Aug. butter prod. was 110 mil. lbs, 23.6% above August ‘06 but 4.9% below July ‘07.

NFDM production increased 40.7% over Aug. ‘06 compared to a 3.4% increase in Dry Whey production and a drop of 14.0% for WPC.

Dairy Producer Dean Foods to Cut 600 to 700 Jobs Due to High Milk Prices

Dean Foods Co., the nation’s largest dairy producer, said Tuesday that record high milk prices are cutting into profits, and the company plans to cut 600 to 700 jobs.

The company lowered its profit expectations for the third quarter and all of 2007. Dean expects to take a restructuring charge in the third quarter for the job cuts, but it didn’t provide a dollar figure.

Sartori to Build $15 Million Plant in Wisconsin

Sartori Foods on Thursday said it will build a $15 million facility in Plymouth, Wis., that will allow the company to boost production, particularly for its specialty market cheeses. The plant is expected to be completed by December 2008.

Imports of Canadian Cattle to Restart

On Nov. 19, USDA will open the border to imports of Canadian cattle, including dairy heifers.   Prior to the ban, the United States was importing an estimated 4,000-6,000 dairy cows per month.

Total July cheese output was 795.4 million lbs., up 2.6% from a year ago. In the first seven months of 2007, total cheese output was 5.621 billion lbs., up just 2.0% vs. 2006.
