Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that as part of USDA’s continuing efforts to listen to and respond to the needs of producers in the dairy industry he is moving forward on establishing the Dairy Industry Advisory Committee and is requesting nominations.

In the July 2009
milk production report, the 23-state July milk prod. value was 14.9 billion
pounds, up 0.1%t from July 2008. Production per cow averaged 1,769 pounds, 25 pounds above July 2008.
The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.40 million
head, 115,000 less than July 2008, and 34,000 less than June 2009.

CWT officials released more detailed information today about the size and scope of the self-help
program’s second‐largest herd retirement. 73 percent of the farms selected are located
east of the Mississippi River, while 70 percent of the 87,000 cows to be retired come from the
Western and Southwest regions of the U.S. 72 percent of the milk removed will come from

CME spot block price increased to $1.3325, a gain of 2.25¢ and the highest price since December 18. The
spot barrel price increased 1¢ to $1.30. The
spot butter price remained unchanged while
Grade A nonfat dry milk
increased 0.50¢ to close at $1.00.

U.S exports of cheese during June totaled 20.4 million lbs. according to USDA/FAS data released
this morning. Cheese exports are the highest in eight months, but are still 24% lower than a year
ago. Exports of other products continue to lag behind last year. SMP/NDM exports were 45.0 million lbs, down 55%. Butterfat exports were 3.6 million
lbs., down 81%. The bright spot was dry whey exports of 38.5 million lbs., an increase of 15%. To access the FAS trade data, click here.

Cooperatives Working Together announced today that it has tentatively accepted 294 bids in the third herd retirement it has conducted in the last nine months. These farms account for 86,710 cows and 1.8 billion pounds of milk. For a copy of the news release, click here.
