The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the
August Consumer Price Index. The cheese CPI was 222.5,
up 1.4% from July. The August butter CPI was 182.3, he highest level since January 2006. The CPI for whole milk dropped 1.4% from the record July level of 225.4.

July
U.S. Dried Whey Exports were estimated to be 34,692 metric tonnes (MT). This represents a 38% increase over amount exported during June. So far in 2008, dried whey exports are estimated to be 190,415 MT, a 16% decrease versus the similar period in 2007.
July Cheese exports were 10,915 MT, an increase of 63% from Jul 07.
July Butter
exports were 7,074 MT, approximately 1,300 MT below the Jun 08 level.

New Mexico has lost its status as a
bovine tuberculosis-free state, a decision state officials say is excessive and could cost ranching and dairy operations unnecessary tests.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, in a notice published in Thursday’s Federal Register, said that because two infected herds had been found in New Mexico’s accredited free-zone since May 2007, it no longer met federal requirements and the state had to be downgraded.

The
Sept. WASDE report was released on Sept. 12th. Included in this report is the latest USDA forecasts of U.S. milk production and dairy-related prices for 2009. The mid-points of
the revised forecasts are: Cheddar Cheese, $1.890; butter, $1.415;
nonfat, $1.490 and whey, $0.275. These price reductions were the result of an an upward revision in USDA’s milk production estimate.

weekly dried whey price for the week ending Sept. 6th was $0.2270 .

As of today (Sept. 12th) the
CME Block spot price has increased every trading day in Sept with the price increasing from$ 1.6800 on Sept. 1 to 1.9025 today.

Milk-Feed Price ratio is estimated to be 1.89 compared to a ratio of 3.19 for August ‘07 .

cheese production was 812 mill. lbs., 1.5% above July 2007 and 0.3 % above June 2008.
July butter production was 117 mil. lbs., slightly above July 2007 and 2.7% below June 2008.

The August
Announced Class III price is $17.32. This represents a $0.98 drop from July’s value and a $2.51 decrease from August 2007.
