The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the November values of the dairy-related Consumer Price Indexes, Producer Price Indexes and Retail prices. These are now available from our database.

After last week’s dramatic decline, the butter market has experienced a mini-rebound increasing $0.10 for the 1st two days of trading this week.

Today is a record day at the CME spot market. Cheddar block prices dropped $0.18 to end the data at $1.5750. Barrels dropped $0.2250 to end the day at $1.5225. Spot butter prices dropped $0.06 to end the day at $1.1300 .

The CWT announced the acceptance of 184 bids representing 61,078 cows eliminating 1.2 bil. lbs. of milk. It is the second largest amount of cows to be removed, but will eliminate the greatest amount of milk since the program began in 2003.  The two herd retirements this year will eliminate 85,663 cows and 1.637 billion lbs. of milk.

The Nov. Class III price was announced today to be $15.51. and Class IV was announced at $12.25. The Class III price represents a $1.55 drop from October and a $3.71 decline from Nov. 2007.

After yesterday’s futures trading there were some dramatic decreases in 2009 Class III futures. April and May 2009 futures closed @ 13.64 and $13.68 respectively.

According to the latest Dairy Products Report concerning October production levels:
Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 842 million pounds, 2.0 percent above October 2007 and 5.8 percent above September 2008.
Italian type cheese production totaled 343 million pounds, 1.4 percent below October 2007 but 2.8 percent above September 2008.
American type cheese production totaled 342 million pounds, 6.5 percent above October 2007 and 7.9 percent above September 2008.
Butter production was 130 million pounds, slightly below October 2007 but 7.4 percent above September 2008.
Dry Milk Powders: (comparisons with October 2007) Nonfat dry milk, human — 121 million pounds, up 21.1 percent. Skim milk powders — 17.6 million pounds, down 18.1 percent.
Whey products: (comparisons with October 2007) Dry whey, total — 85.2 million pounds, down 4.2 percent. Lactose, human and animal — 60.2 million pounds, down 2.2 percent. Whey protein concentrate, total — 36.7 million pounds, up 13.8 percent.

The CME spot butter price fell another $0.03 yesterday. Current spot butter and powder prices yield a Class IV of about $10.65.
