November World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates Available

The Nov. issue of the WASDE report is available on the website. This report contains forecasts of milk production and utilization, milk prices and dairy-based commodity prices. In addition their estimates are that corn production is expected to be 12 billion bushels, down slightly from last month’s report, with yields averaging 154 bushels/acre. Soybean production is forecast at 2.92 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from last month, with yields at 39 bushels.

Weakening Economy Starting to Impact Demand For Organic Foods

The sales volume of organic products, which had been growing at 20% a year in recent years, slowed to a much lower growth rate in the last few months, according to the Nielsen Company, a market research firm. For the four-week period that ended Oct. 4, the volume of organic products sold rose just 4% compared with the same period a year earlier.

Organic Pasturing Rules Are Being Changed.

USDA’s Oct. 24th proposal specifies that organic livestock, those raised free of hormones, antibiotics or pesticide-treated grain, must be allowed to graze in a pasture at least 120 days a year. Thirty percent of the cows’ feed must be from such grazing, rather than being fed organically produced food in a feedlot or an indoor facility.

New Zealand Milk Production Expected to Increase 8%

In a new USDA, FAS report, milk production is forecast to increase in the 2009 Marketing Year by 8% over the 2008 level. New Zealand has increased the size of its dairy herd by 200,000 cows over the past two years.
