The Nov. issue of the
WASDE report is available on the website. This report contains forecasts of milk production and utilization, milk prices and dairy-based commodity prices. In addition their estimates are that corn production is expected to be 12 billion bushels, down slightly from last month’s report, with yields averaging 154 bushels/acre. Soybean production is forecast at 2.92 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from last month, with yields at 39 bushels.

The sales volume of organic products, which had been growing at 20% a year in recent years, slowed to a
much lower growth rate in the last few months, according to the Nielsen Company, a market research firm. For the four-week period that ended Oct. 4, the volume of organic products sold rose just 4% compared with the same period a year earlier.

USDA’s
Oct. 24th proposal specifies that organic livestock, those raised free of hormones,
antibiotics or pesticide-treated grain, must be allowed to graze in a pasture at least 120
days a year. Thirty percent of the cows’ feed must be from such grazing, rather than being
fed organically produced food in a feedlot or an indoor facility.

In a new
USDA, FAS report, milk production is forecast to increase in the 2009 Marketing Year by 8% over the 2008 level. New Zealand has increased the size of its dairy herd by 200,000 cows over the past two years.
