Senate Generates First Draft of Farm Bill

The Dairy Title to the 2007 Farm Bill looks very similar to the House version except (1) the payment rate of the MILC program is increased from 34% to 45%, (2) the allowable milk marketing under the MILC program is increased from2.4 mil. lbs. to 4.15 mil. lbs. from Oct. 1, 2008-Aug. 31, 2012 and (3) dairy product assessments are not applied to dairy product imports. Total Sept. Butter Stocks Decline But Still High

The Sept. butter stocks declined by more than 18 mil. lbs from Aug. but are at the highest Sept. value since 1993.

Sept. Cheese Stocks Show Little Decline

Sept. end-of-month American cheese stocks were 542.9 mil. lbs., a decrease of 2.7 mil. lbs. from Aug.  American cheese inventories typically decline more in September than any other month.   This could be the smallest decline in Sept. commercial American cheese inventories since 1987.

Sept. milk production increases 2.6%

Milk production in the 23 major States during September totaled 13.7 billion pounds, up 3.1 percent from September 2006. August production, unrevised at 14.3 billion pounds, was up 3.6 percent from August 2006.

Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,644 pounds for September, 31 pounds above September 2006.

The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.34 million head, 91,000 head more than September 2006, and 12,000 head more than August 2007.

Class I mover for November is $21.45

The November Class I mover is $21.45, a decrease of 14¢ from October but this still represents an increase of $9.05 from Nov. ‘06.

Senate Finace Committee Rejects Tariffs on Milk Products

On a voice vote, the Senate Finance committee defeated a proposal to restrict the amount of milk protein concentrate that can enter the country without punitive tariffs.

The Sept. Class III Increases 24¢ from August

The Sept. Class III is $20.07 and increase of a whopping $7.78 from Sept. 2006.  The Sept. Class IV is $21.61, an increase of $10.51 from Sept. 2006.

August Dairy Products Report Shows Decrease Cheese Output and Increase Dry Products

Total Aug. cheese output was 795 mil. lbs., 0.1 percent below August ‘06 and 0.1 percent below July ‘07.

Aug. butter prod. was 110 mil. lbs, 23.6% above August ‘06 but 4.9% below July ‘07.

NFDM production increased 40.7% over Aug. ‘06 compared to a 3.4% increase in Dry Whey production and a drop of 14.0% for WPC.

Dairy Producer Dean Foods to Cut 600 to 700 Jobs Due to High Milk Prices

Dean Foods Co., the nation’s largest dairy producer, said Tuesday that record high milk prices are cutting into profits, and the company plans to cut 600 to 700 jobs.

The company lowered its profit expectations for the third quarter and all of 2007. Dean expects to take a restructuring charge in the third quarter for the job cuts, but it didn’t provide a dollar figure.
